REY LEAR

Rodrigo Garcia’s text proposes a contemporary reading of some of the topics that kept Shakespeare awake in the writing of ‘King Lear’: contempt for old age, loneliness and power madness, unbridled ambition -materialism as goal- parental mandate, inheritance. García cuts out characters from the original drama leaving only the Lear clan (Lear, Cordelia, Regan and Goneril), but adding the Clown (Buffoon or Fool in Shakespeare). Thus avoiding the parallel plots that develop the other characters, focusing on the Family around which he unveils these topics. The stylistic treatment of the text plays with the constant switch between the prosaic and the poetic, the popular and the erudite, the explicit and the veiled. You could say that Garcia composes his King Lear as a kind of tableau vivant of contemporary ethics through a language both educated and coarse, bringing the sophisticated closer to the savage, strongly intertextual, parodic and referential. One of the key topics both in Shakespeare’s text as in Rodrigo Garcia’s is inheritance. The idea of the transmission of power, knowledge and material goods from generation to generation is expressed in different ways throughout the tragedy. In Garcia Wehbi’s staging, the exclusive mean to deal with this topic is food. The stage will be a feast, where a kind of "war of /for food" takes place. In a strongly parodic key, the tragic comedy will unfold itself through the food metaphor as a way of narrating the human relationships (blood, affective, social and political).
