(The apparition/ The double)
Dismantling the script and staging of EL (A)PARECIDO we would quickly and coarsely find characters from Kafka’s America or PT Barnum’s circus, lists reminiscent to Sei Shônagon’s Pillow Book, quotes from Shakespeare and Rilke, references to Through the Looking Glass by Lewis Carroll and the Magic Flute by Mozart, Emilio Salgari, Jules Verne, and popular encyclopedia ‘Lo sé todo’ (Vita Meraviglosa), scenes from the Marx Brothers movies, nineteenth century freaks and bizarre creature pictures, costumes resembling more to children’s than to theater’s, transcription fragments of William Gaddis’ Agapē Agape, rudimentary rewritings of Walter Benjamin’s concepts of originality and reproduction, thoughts on technology and capitalism, and the list goes on. At first glance we would find ourselves standing in front of a disorganized entanglement of seemingly unrelated ideas and structures, but in a deeper scrutiny we might note that there is a theme that evenly colors, or better put, that casts a shade over these materials. This theme is memory, but memory as a subjective event; memory as the recovery of our own identity and its relationship with the world; a childhood memory that first hand seems apolitical but is in fact deeply and truly political; a memory that teaches us that the act of remembering is a volitional but also casual, whimsical, selective and unexpected act. And reading between the lines even deeper, we would recognize that shade as casted by the writing and the images of a great poet of cinema, a relatively hidden gem, a lover of cats and riddles: Chris Marker. This (A)parecido is utterly subsidiary to the scripts and concepts of his films Sans Soleil and La Jetée, and this piece’s libretto and staging are dedicated to this creator.
