EL MATADERO. UN COMENTARIO

(The Slaughterhouse, a comment)
Taking Echeverria’s classic as a pre-text or as construction formwork, I decided to write a script that contained both the voices and the ideas of the characters that, since the founding of the fatherland, have collaborated, in a schizophrenic process, to the country’s permanent construction / destruction. My working concept was no longer civilization or barbarism, but civilization and barbarism. Departing from this notion, borrowing quotes, references and a diversity of texts (cattle behavior manuals, fragments of texts and poems from national and universal literature, historical quotes, etc.) a fresco of voices become organized, the relentless voices whose untiring purpose is to silence the voices of the other. This is how this Slaughterhouse works as a comment. The Slaughterhouse, a comment, is an opera for eight voices and a dancer. Its two main characters, Cajetilla and Mazorquero are the archetypal representation of the historical divide between Unitarianism and Rosism; there is a Bull / Cow, embodied by a dancer, sign of the country’s tragic fate. Completing the picture, a six-voice choir that functions in the manner of a Greek chorus. The treatment of both the textual and the musical structure is fragmented and schizophrenic, and feeds from universal and popular culture references, and from Argentina's political history. The work is circumscribed by Hilario Ascasubi’s poem La Refalosa, which works as prologue and epilogue, framing eight "comment" scenes on Echeverria’s original material. The staging proposes a concise objetual world albeit powerful, where a closed muddy space cages the characters’ action as if Argentina was a prison, and whose formal expression is an animal slaughterhouse. Thus, the eviscerated body of the Nation -Cow/Marzorquero/Cajetilla- braid the story in the shape of chitterlings, filled with the spirit debris of Echeverria, Artaud, Lautreamont, Perón, Rosas, Shakespeare, Kafka, and others.
